FAQ
About Biltong
Origins, benefits, and key facts about our biltong.
What is Biltong?
Biltong is a cured and air-dried beef delicacy, originating in South Africa in the 17th century as a method of preserving meat. The name means “strips of beef” in Dutch. Over the years, it evolved into a popular savoury snack enjoyed worldwide. Our biltong is high in protein, low in fat, preservative-free, and perfect for snacking, hiking, picnics, or adding to meals.
Is Biltong the same as beef jerky?
No. Biltong is cured and cold air-dried, preserving nutrients and flavour, while jerky is cooked at high temperatures and often contains preservatives.
Is Biltong good for me?
Yes – it’s high in protein, rich in iron, low in fat, and preservative-free.
Is your Biltong gluten-free?
Yes. We use a specially formulated gluten-free tamari soy sauce and regularly test our products to confirm this.
Does Biltong come sliced or whole?
We usually send it sliced for ease of weighing, but you can request whole pieces in the checkout notes.
Storage, Shelf Life & Usage
How to store, enjoy, and make the most of your biltong.
What is the best way to store Biltong?
Keep in the fridge in a paper bag for short-term storage (it will continue drying), or freeze in an airtight container to keep it soft for up to 6 months.
How long does Biltong last?
Up to 6 months in the freezer. Extra-dry versions can last even longer.
What can Biltong be used for?
Eat it straight as a snack, or add to salads, sandwiches, pizzas, quiches, muffins, and other savoury dishes.
