FAQs

About Biltong

What is Biltong?
Biltong is essentially a cured and air-dried beef steak, with the final texture closely comparable to a Prosciutto. Originating in South Africa in the 17th century as a method of preserving meat in the harsh conditions, it has since evolved into a delicious delicacy and is probably the most popular and well-known snack in Southern Africa – just ask anyone who’s been there!

Is Biltong the same as Beef Jerky?
No.

Our Biltong is seasoned and cured in all-natural ingredients and then slowly air-dried using cool, dry air - similar to making Prosciutto. This means we’re preserving the flavour of the beef along with all its natural nutrition. Traditionally, Jerky is often highly processed, cooked & smoked at high temperatures and often contains preservatives and other nasties. OUR Jerky, on the other hand, is also made by using only natural ingredients to season and cure the meat, thinly sliced and dried on racks in the same dryers as our Biltong, resulting in a delicious, healthy and morish snack

Is Biltong good for me?
Yes – our Biltong is high in protein, rich in iron, low in fat, Gluten-Free and Preservative-free.

Is your Biltong gluten-free?
Yes, our Biltong is Gluten-free. As a matter of fact, ALL of our Biltong Man products are Gluten-Free.

Does Biltong come sliced or whole?
You can order both sliced Biltong and whole pieces, whatever you prefer!

Is all Biltong the same?
NO! Since we started to introduce Biltong to Sydney and beyond all those years ago, many are now making it and claiming to make the “best” biltong… We take no short-cuts and NEVER compromise on quality. Unlike some of those trying to emulate our products, we do not use heat in our drying process as that dramatically changes the texture, colour and flavour of Biltong.

What is Wagyu Biltong?
The Biltong Man pioneered the manufacturing of Wagyu Beef Biltong in 2010, when Wagyu Beef was still unknown to most. Wagyu Beef has a beautiful, marbled texture and is higher in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

This delicacy might be a bit more expensive than our normal lean biltong, but the exceptional flavour and rich, creamy texture is incomparable to anything you’ve tasted before. Once you’ve experienced this burst of flavour, you will never forget it. We believe that “Umami” is the best word to describe this unique taste!

Is your Biltong Kosher or Halal?
No, however all of our meat are Export Quality and therefore MS certified.

Storage, Shelf Life & Usage

What is the best way to store Fresh Biltong?
Even though Biltong is cured & air-dried, it is still considered a fresh meat (like a prosciutto) and should be treated as such. Store in a paper bag in the fridge for up to 2 weeks - it will dry out with time. For longer periods, store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months - this will retain the moisture. Be sure to keep it covered tightly to reduce risk of freezer-burn.

How long does Biltong last?
For fresh Biltong, up to weeks when stored in the fridge, in a paper bag and up to 4 months when stored in an air-tight container in the freezer. Our pre-packed 100g & 50g packets each contain an Oxygen Absorber sachet, extending the shelf life for these unopened packs by up to 8 months. Once opened, they should be refrigerated and stored using the same methods stipulated for fresh Biltong. The REALLY dry products, like our Snapstix & Chilli Bites, can last even longer.

What can Biltong be used for?
Our Biltong is the Ultimate ready-to-eat snack solution for everything from hiking trips (and skiing), picnics, sporting events, and cheese platters to the kids’ lunch boxes. Use it to spice up to salads, sandwiches, pizzas, quiches, muffins, and more - the possibilities are endless!
