FAQs

WHAT IS BILTONG?

Biltong is a cured and air-dried beef delicacy, made similarly to a prosciutto.

Biltong originated in South Africa and I love it!!

Translated from Dutch, Biltong literally means “strips of beef”.

Biltong was first made by the Dutch settlers in South Africa in the 17th century as a way of preserving fresh meat in the harsh conditions of those times. Meat got cut into strips, packed in salt and salpeter for an extend period of time to cure and then hung up to dry. The best results were achieved in winter when the air was cold and dry.

Biltong has since evolved into a delicacy. Over the ensuing years, biltong enthusiasts started to add different ingredients such as brown sugar, pepper and coriander to suit individual tastes and preferences. Biltong has arguably become the most popular savoury snack in Southern Africa (and with many other countries soon to be added!)

Our Biltong is a great “ready to eat” snack solution and is perfect for hiking trips, picnics, cheese platters, kid’s lunch boxes and of course, an accompaniment to watching your favourite footy team.

Our Biltong is the perfect High Protein, Low Fat, Preservative Free snack!

Our Biltong is also often used in Salads, on sandwiches, pizza’s and as a main ingredient in quiches, scones and other savoury dishes. See “Recipes”

What is the best way to store biltong?

Even though Biltong is cured and air-dried, it’s still meat! Because our Biltong is Preservative Free, we recommend that it be stored in the fridge in  a paper bag over short periods, where it’ll just dry out more.

Should you wish to store it for longer than 3 days, or you want the biltong to stay soft (moist), we recommend you store it in an air-tight container in the Freezer. Biltong can be stored in the Freezer for up to 6 months.

Is Biltong the same as beef jerky?

No! Even though both are dried beef products, our Biltong is cured and cold air-dried. This process ensures that our Biltong retains all of the nutrients, protein and iron as opposed to beef jerky that gets cooked at a high temperature. There are also NO PRESERVATIVES in our Biltong, unlike most brands of beef jerky.

Can I send it overseas?

Some countries have restrictions on various food-types allowed in. Biltong can for example be taken from Australia into South Africa, but not the other way around!

Trust me, it’s heartbreaking to give up your biltong at the airport due to quarantine restrictions!

Best to check with the relevant quarantine authorities before you travel with Biltong or send any Biltong overseas.

Is Biltong good for me?

Biltong is a great source of protein and iron. Our Biltong is high in protein, low in fat and preservative free. You do the maths!

Is our Biltong Gluten free?

Yes and no!!
One of the ingredients listed on our nutritional panel is soy sauce, and The Biltong Man uses only premium grade Kikkoman Soy sauce. Even though wheat is an ingredient of soy sauce, during the fermentation process the structure of this changes and the end product is gluten free. Please see the attached test results the good folks at Kikkoman have provided.

As with everything in life, if you’re not sure about it, don’t risk it! Everyone of us are different and you may react differently should you be allergic to gluten. Please don’t hesitate to contact us should you have any queries.

Does our Biltong come sliced or whole?

For ease of weighing, we send our Biltong sliced. However, if you prefer it whole you can request this in the customer notes at the bottom of checkout screen.

Of course we also sell it any way you like when you buy from any of our premises.

How long does Biltong and related products last?

If stored correctly in a paper bag in the fridge, it will just dry out more and more until it becomes super dry and brittle. Some people prefer this!

If stored in an air-tight container or even wrapped in cling-film in the freezer, it will last for up to 6 months.

I recently found a 2-year old packet of our Beef Snapstix (the really dry version) in my golf bag. Needless to say, I was hungry and had it. No problem so far!!
